Summary
The class will incorporate all aspects of ignition analysis, including: -Theory and operation -Physics involved (digestible stuff...applicable information) -Proper tooling -Scope Set-up -Raster/Paraded/Single waveform analysis -primary voltage/amperage -Secondary kV -Carbon issues/GDI -Waveform capture and storage -Snap-throttle testing -Ignition timing importance -Proper analytic technique This testing and analytical technique has been lost over the years with the advent of recent technologies. The point of ignition is not as easily accessible. However, physics will never change, making ignition waveform acquisition and analysis highly applicable and sought after. Application of tools and testing techniques will be demonstrated through case study presentation of different varieties, and the class is designed to be highly interactive with class attendees. The object of the class is to create an environment for learning that boosts confidence. This will lead to accuracy and efficiency. Students will leave the class with a solid understanding of how ignition systems function in general and what is involved in creating the spark between the plug electrodes. They will gain confidence in the acquisition process to invest in the appropriate tooling and learn how to implement the tools on known-good vehicles. They will leave the class with the knowledge of how to practice and experiment safely while gaining the confidence to incorporate these techniques into their existing diagnostic process, eventually replacing time-consuming techniques with ignition waveform acquisition and analysis. These testing techniques can be applied to any vehicle with spark ignition.

  • Jim Cokonis
Jim graduated from NADC with honors where he learned both light-duty automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles. He started his career working in a fuel injection shop repairing pumps, injectors, and turbos. His position also included maintaining inventory, billing clients, and performing vehicle work. He has also been the main mechanic for a 9000-acre grain farming operation where he worked on everything from string trimmers to hillside combines. The growth in automotive electronic control systems eventually drew him to the automotive side, where his fascination with how things worked sparked a drive to learn. Through various opportunities, he learned multiple skills in the automotive industry. Working in the bay, on the counter, and as a technical support and salesperson provided a nuanced understanding of the industry. This eventually developed into a business where Jim provided technical support for diagnosis, module installation, and reprogramming services in the early 2000s. This opened up an opportunity to become a trainer for CTI in 2007. Jim ended up teaching others everything he was ever passionate about. From radio-controlled flying to martial arts to shooting and SCUBA, those skills helped him teach technicians with a practical mindset. This role had opportunities to provide specialized instruction and collaborate on programs for national companies and independent shops across the country. He eventually was offered a position developing curriculum for other instructors. His fascination with teaching and brain science led to a certification as a content curator for an adaptive learning platform. Jim currently works with an adaptive learning company providing content to help practicing technicians learn, grow, and maintain core knowledge related to vehicle repair. He continues to learn daily and invites others to join the journey. He also holds the flashlight for Bryan

Summary
This is an interactive class. It is intended to be a discussion about the things we do not know. Any individual working in the transportation business is learning new things. The normal course of our days should be exposing us to these things daily in many ways. It does not matter if we are in the front or back of the shop, the need to learn and grow is one of the appealing realities of this career for many. If you want to learn the secret to becoming an upper-echelon technician, this is a highly recommended path. It is not an easy button class or silver bullets. It is not a “look what I can do” class. It is a discussion about the pursuit of excellence. Bryan and Jim openly admit that they do not know everything. The more they learn, the more they realize how much there is to learn. This class is built around real examples of vehicle repair processes and the need to find and apply knowledge to solve the puzzle. It will also provide strategies for improving problem-solving skills and information about the reality of how we learn. Some myths may also be shattered. If you are looking for a class that shows how to use a scope to check the phase of the moon or the latest fad techniques that have been out for 25 years, these may not be the droids you are looking for. If you would like to participate in a discussion where audience participation is encouraged, there will be opportunities to network with others and learn from each other. Bryan and Jim look forward to speaking with you in class.

After being in the dealership for many years, Josh became the service manager for a six-bay independent shop, which owns a six-bay body shop as well. Running a shop of this size allowed him to see many different drivability issues, along with a lot of electrical and programming issues on the body shop side. Throughout his career, Josh has always been driven to learn new techniques and grow into a better technician. He has traveled around the country to take all the training he could and learn better techniques from the best instructors and technicians in the country. He then came back and applied what he learned in the shop, teaching the staff of technicians to help them rise to the next level. Josh’s passion for diagnostics led him to start his part-time mobile diagnostic business and also led him to develop and instruct some training classes for some of his local automotive chapters. Josh is constantly growing as a technician and improving his skills. He loves to see not just technicians, but all people grow and get better at whatever their goals or passion are. • Josh Weaver - Dorman Training Center
Josh has an Associate in Applied Science in Automotive Technology. The program was backed by Chrysler and General Motors, and while in college he worked for a Ford dealership, which allowed him to learn all three domestic brands. After college, he went on to work at a Kia dealership, where he achieved his A.S.E and Kia Master Tech certifications. Josh is a certified Pennsylvania emissions and safety inspector, EPA 609 certified, and holds A.S.E. L1 and L3. He was the lead technician at the dealership, which allowed him to see some of the most difficult and challenging vehicle issues that came through the shop. This allowed Josh to hone his diagnostic skills, and teach his fellow technicians different approaches and diagnostic methods to solve problems. His goal is to help keep moving the industry forward and improving for the better, by helping technicians learn and grow.
